PERSONAL

I completed my schooling in Vienna and performed my military service at the Stammersdorf Army Hospital. I am married and the father of a daughter and a son. Through my decades of leadership at the University Hospital Vienna, I directly link top-tier university medicine with patient-oriented care in the outpatient sector. Since 2002, I have also been bringing this expertise to private practice.

TRAINING

My academic and clinical career is based on a multi-stage, internationally oriented education at leading medical institutions:

  • Human Medicine & Doctorate: Study of human medicine at the University of Vienna, graduating as a Doctor of General Medicine in 1987.
  • International Research Stay: From 1988 to 1990, postgraduate research stay in New York City (USA) at Cornell University – New York Hospital, Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology.
  • Clinical Basic Training: Resident physician at the Wilhelminenspital of the City of Vienna (now Klinik Ottakring).
  • Research and University Career: Research associate at the Ludwig Boltzmann Institute for Experimental Endocrinology and University Assistant at the University Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology Vienna.
  • Final Clinical Responsibility: Since June 1, 1999, I have been active as a Senior Consultant at the University Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, with the authority for final responsibility in the operating room and delivery room areas.
  • Habilitation: In 2002, I completed my habilitation in Obstetrics and Gynecology at the Medical University of Vienna and was granted the license to teach.

PROFESSIONAL EXPERIENCE

My clinical practice includes decades of leading core obstetric areas of maximum university care, as well as significantly shaping medical treatment guidelines in the German-speaking region:

Clinical Leadership and University Focus

  • Delivery Room and Ward Management: I was the long-standing head of the delivery room and the pre-partal ward (ward for high-risk pregnancies) of the Department of Obstetrics and Feto-maternal Medicine at the University Hospital Vienna.
  • Interdisciplinary Cooperation: Specialized care and postoperative follow-up for patients in close cooperation with the Continence and Pelvic Floor Center Vienna.

Scientific Guideline Work and Quality Assurance
As an expert, I am directly involved in the creation and updating of medical treatment standards:

  • Guideline Commission: Member of the Guideline Commission of the German Society of Gynecology and Obstetrics (DGGG) as the official representative of the Austrian Society of Gynecology and Obstetrics (OEGGG).
  • AWMF Guidelines: Lead author of clinical guidelines for the Association of the Scientific Medical Societies (AWMF), including:
    • Management of Preterm Birth
    • Peripartum Hemorrhage (Diagnosis, Therapy, and Management)
    • Management of 3rd and 4th Degree Perineal Tears after Vaginal Delivery
  • Austrian Birth Registry (GRÖ): Chairman of the Advisory Board of the Austrian Birth Registry for nationwide quality assurance in obstetrics.

Teaching and Further Education

  • Clinical Training: Conducting regular training events on the management of emergencies in the delivery room (including the “Dienstfit” program, Karl Landsteiner Institute, Ordensklinikum Linz).
  • Congresses: Invited speaker at national and international medical congresses.

AREAS OF FOCUS

  • Holistic Pregnancy Care: Support during pregnancy within the framework of statutory preventive examinations (Parent-Child Pass) as well as postpartum follow-up.
  • High-Risk Pregnancies & Feto-maternal Medicine: Specialized clarification, counseling, and monitoring for threatened preterm birth, multiple pregnancies, or maternal pre-existing conditions.
  • Urogynäkological Counseling: Diagnostics and therapy planning for pelvic floor weakness and incontinence issues in cooperation with specialized centers.
  • Second Opinion and Birth Planning: Specialist consultation before planned deliveries, especially after previous complicated births (e.g., high-grade perineal tears).

DIPLOMAS / CERTIFICATES

  • Specialist Diploma in Gynecology and Obstetrics: Proof of full specialist qualification according to Austrian medical law.
  • Habilitation Certificate: Official conferral of the license to teach (Venia Docendi) as a university lecturer or university professor.
