Blood Coagulation & Coagulation Clinic for Children and Adolescents
The malacht practice in Vienna 1010 offers a specialized coagulation clinic for children and adolescents aged 0 to 18 years. Under the direction of Private Lecturer Dr. Katharina Thom, families receive competent and understandable support in the assessment of bleeding tendencies, coagulation disorders, and thromboses. The clinic complements the coagulation outpatient clinic at AKH Vienna and enables continuous care in a familiar practice environment.
The range of services includes diagnostics for abnormal coagulation values, familial bleeding tendencies, as well as unusually heavy or frequently recurring bleeding. Furthermore, children with known conditions such as hemophilia, Von Willebrand syndrome, and thrombophilia receive long-term care – including follow-up examinations, preparation for operations, and support during ongoing anticoagulation.
Thanks to our interdisciplinary collaboration and state-of-the-art equipment, we are available for you 365 days a year – in our bright, light-filled premises in 1010 Vienna, easy to reach with plenty of parking nearby.

Coagulation Assessment in Children
A coagulation assessment can be useful for a variety of reasons:
- abnormal coagulation values, for example before planned operations or procedures
- familial bleeding tendencies or known coagulation disorders in the family
- unusually heavy or frequently recurring bleeding, such as bruises (hematomas), prolonged nosebleeds, or mucosal bleeding
- bleeding complications after procedures or injuries
- suspected predisposition to thrombosis or after a thrombosis in the child or family
The clinic also offers: detailed parent and family discussions during diagnosis, the creation of individual treatment and operation preparation plans, and regular follow-up examinations.
Thromboses, Thrombophilia, and Anticoagulation
Another focus of the coagulation clinic is the care of children and adolescents with:
- thromboses (blood clots in veins or arteries)
- thrombophilias (congenital or acquired predisposition to thromboses)
- unexplained cause for a previous thrombosis
- increased risk of recurrent thromboembolic events
- ongoing anticoagulation (blood thinners), also before and after operations
The goal is a well-founded assessment of individual risk and a safe, well-supported therapy.

Step 1.
Contact us by phone or email. We will then send you a questionnaire for coagulation assessment, which you should complete and return to the practice.
Step 2.
The completed questionnaire will be evaluated by Dr. Thom. You will then receive a referral for blood collection at the laboratory.
Step 3.
The findings will be discussed during an individually arranged appointment after prior consultation.
